I have so much to write about the schooling system but I am not going to just throw it all in this because it’s going to be way too long. This is the first of many posts that explains what I truly believe of the school system and why it has to be changed before the government can do more harm to students.
This schooling system has been around for decades yet there have not been any major changes - maybe that women can study is schools now but even that ISN’T allowed in all countries, now that is going to be a whole completely different post. This system is the only system out there that refuses to adapt and change to the society around it. While everything evolves and gets better the school system just goes backward since the schools give students more work to do meaning they have less time to go outside and have a life; less time to become independent and do something more meaningful that will help them for the future. The times have changed and the demands to live are different now which means that what is taught in the school and how it is taught should also change. Since schools take away the children’s free time and ability to get ready for their future than its the school’s job to help them prepare for their future. If you treat someone like a child they will act like a child but if you treat them like an adult then they will act like adults. This means that if you help them learn how to live like adults and do the things that adults do then they will start acting like adults and will know what they are supposed to do when they are sent off to live by themselves.
We spend about 15 years of our life in school, this is not including further education like university. This means school is the only place where we can learn about being an adult. In the past 16 years of my life I can tell you now that I have not been taught something that will truly help me when it comes to living my life. Our smartness is NOT measured by how well we can memorize poems and analysis them under time conditions instead it is SHOWN by how we can live by ourselves and our common sense. Some people can be the smartest in the year group but when it comes to their common sense or how ‘street smart’ they are they don’t know anything because their whole life has been so focused on how much if the syllabus they can cram into their head. This isn’t good. Schools have a duty to prepaid you for the future but instead, it is causing people to lack the ability to have a life or friends because they are too busy revising for that test.
Instead of learning about Shakespeare and his plays that no one understands we should be learning about how to pay taxes and how to get a loan from the bank. Or even the simple things like how to load the washing machine or make the bed. It’s sad to say but I have met people who are 15 who don’t know how to load a washing machine just because at home they had people to do it for them. Now I am not saying that it’s their fault or its wrong but I am saying that their parents chose to privilege them with not having to do that but then the school should be teaching how to do that, especially if its a boarding school. I know this sounds absurd, I am well aware but all I am trying to put across is that the schooling system is not teaching us how to live like adults like we have to and it is causing a lot more people to not want to go away from heir parents because they depend on them. Schools should start teaching students how to do basic adult things by the time they are in year 10/ grade 9 at the latest. This way the schools can plan a way of teaching that is more relevant they teach first. People in the UK can start working and getting paid by 16 (some people I know started working for money at 14/15) which means that schools should start teaching us how to write CVs in year 10 so we know how to do it by the time comes. But I am not even talking about the simple adult things; schools should start teaching students politics and what’s happening in the news and how that affects them. It is our future that we aren’t able to vote for and the voting age isn’t being reduced to 16 because people argue that 16-year-olds don’t know anything about the news and politics, well it’s not exactly out fault considering we spend all our time at school or doing our homework. This again means its the school’s duties to make sure that we know what’s happening in the world and how it affects us so when we are allowed to vote we know how exactly it’s going to affect us. But not even for that reason, many times adults don’t talk to young adults (age 16 and above) as proper adults because to them they aren’t seen as proper adults since they can’t have a proper conversation with them due to the fact that they don’t know what’s happening in the world and they lose their respect for my generation all due to the fact that their generation doesn’t want to change the school system to improve what we learn.
I have tried to keep this as short as I could because if it was any longer I would have gotten off-topic. As you could probably tell I take this topic very seriously and when I can this is one of the first things I will be changing; I have always wanted to start my own school with its own system which is completely adapted to what is needed at that time so hopefully that happens one day but till then all I can do is share my beliefs on here. A few years ago I saw the video that Prince Ea did on how he ‘Sued the School System’ and there was one quote he said from Einstein which was ‘Don’t judge the fish by its ability to climb a tree’ and to this day I still believe that this quote is very relevant to the school system and how my generation is treated these days. We haven’t been given the opportunity to learn how to properly live as an adult but yet we are getting judged for that since it’s our faults and it’s happened because we spend too much time on our phones. To me, this is very interesting because I know no-one from that generation is going to do anything but make the schooling harder for us but it’s okay because to them that’s all they have known so that’s what they are going to do to us. As an Indian child, all I hear is how tough school was for my parents but what they don’t release that the schooling has gotten harder for us because it’s becoming less useful as the time goes on and getting the grades and qualifications are getting harder for us because society doesn’t want to to give us time to have a life and become adults.
This system is a very complex and competitive system that has a lot about it that needs to change, but the first change HAS to be to make it more helpful for OUR future.
Till my next post my lovelies x
